A catalog can tell you what exists. Your collection can tell you what you own. But many collectors also need a third thing: a trusted roster that says what belongs together.
That is where public Curated Checklists come in.
A Curated Checklist can describe a complete product line, a themed group, a locomotive class, a commemorative release, or any other roster worth collecting against. It brings individual Models and full Sets into one ordered public guide, then helps signed-in collectors see how their own collection lines up.
CCMF Trains now also has a way for trusted curators to turn a submitted CSV roster into a complete Draft Checklist for review. That makes it much easier to bring accurate, larger checklists into the community without rebuilding every entry by hand.
One shared roster for Models and Sets
Some collecting goals are model-by-model. Others include complete Sets. Curated Checklists support both in the same list.
Each Checklist can include:
- individual catalog Models;
- complete Sets;
- a deliberate member order;
- a cover image;
- curator details;
- a description of what the roster represents; and
- a public page that collectors can browse and follow.
That means the Checklist can reflect the subject itself instead of forcing everything into a single item type.
A collector looking at a product line can see the locomotives, rolling stock, accessories, and Sets together in the order the curator intended.
See progress against your own collection
When you are signed in, a public Checklist becomes more than a static reference page.
CCMF Trains compares the Checklist to your collection and shows ownership progress. As your collection grows, the progress bar and owned indicators update with it.
That makes a Checklist useful in several ways:
- as a collecting goal;
- as a completeness reference;
- as a quick way to spot gaps;
- as a guide while shopping at a show; and
- as a shared definition of what “complete” means for a particular roster.
You do not need to maintain a second spreadsheet just to compare your Pieces with the community roster.
Browse by search or category
The public Checklists page gives collectors one place to discover curated rosters.
You can:
- search by title, description, or curator;
- filter by category;
- sort by newest, oldest, or name; and
- move through the catalog with pagination.
This is especially useful as the Checklist library grows. A roster for one railroad can live beside a product-line guide, a historical era list, or a themed display plan without turning the page into one long undifferentiated directory.
The category filter and search controls can be combined, and a single Clear action restores the full list.
Follow the Checklists that matter to you
Signed-in collectors can follow a public Checklist.
Following gives you a convenient way to keep track of rosters you care about. When new members are added to an approved Checklist, followers can receive an update notification that links back to the list.
This makes a public Checklist feel like a maintained community resource rather than a one-time post.
A collector following a product line can return later and see newly documented releases without having to remember which rows changed.
Discover related Checklists from catalog items
Public catalog pages can also help you find relevant rosters.
When a Model or Set belongs to one or more approved Checklists, its details page can show those Checklist links. That creates a two-way path:
- start from a Checklist and inspect its members; or
- start from a catalog item and discover the larger roster it belongs to.
This is useful when you find an unfamiliar item and want to understand its context. A single locomotive might be part of a broader anniversary release, a class roster, or a themed set of products.
How new Checklists are created
Public Checklists are curated and reviewed before publication.
A trusted curator can submit a CSV roster containing the Checklist details and its ordered members. The import preview validates the file, matches Models and Sets against the CCMF Trains catalog, and identifies anything that still needs catalog work.
The importer does not publish directly. A successful import creates one complete Draft Checklist. An administrator can then review the description, cover image, member order, and catalog matches before approving it for the public site.
That review step is important. It keeps incomplete or ambiguous roster data from appearing as finished community reference material.
Catalog accuracy comes first
Every Checklist member connects to an existing public catalog Model or Set.
That gives the roster durable catalog links instead of disconnected text rows, but it also means the catalog must identify each item clearly. Manufacturer and SKU do most of that work. When legacy data creates an ambiguity, a trusted curator can repair the catalog and refresh the preview before creating the Draft.
For collectors, the result is straightforward: the public Checklist links to real catalog entries, and ownership progress can compare against those same records.
Built for large rosters, not just short lists
A short Checklist is easy to enter manually. A large catalog line is not.
The CSV import path exists so trusted curators can prepare and verify a roster in a spreadsheet, then bring it into CCMF Trains without losing the intended member order. The system stages the upload securely, checks the whole file before execution, and creates the Checklist and its members together.
That work happens behind the scenes, but it protects the collector experience. You should either see the complete reviewed roster or no new Checklist at all — not a half-built public page.
